Hsiu Jien Lu (1911), the founder of Taiwan's feminist movement, started Pioneer Press in the 1970's as the leading voice to break women from the constraints of traditional gender roles.
"The Essence of New Feminism:
Being human first before being a man or a woman, is the path to self-actualization."
Lu later went on to serve as a legislator (1992-1997), the magistrate of Taoyuan (1997-2000), and the Vice President of Taiwan (2000-2008).
